The Provost and Municipal Magistrates of Paris Discussing the Celebration of Louis XIV's Dinner at the Hotel de Ville after his Recovery in 1687

France, 1689

The French artist Nicolas de Largillière painted landscapes, still lifes and works on historical subjects. However, he gained prominence as a portrait painter. Being first painter to the king, he fulfilled commissions of the city council, members of Parliament, members of the upper class and financiers. The Hermitage canvas is a sketch for the painting created by the artist for one of the halls of the Hotel de Ville in Paris and that perished during the fire of 1793. The subject of the painting was based on a true historical fact: on 30 January 1687 Louis XIV went to the Notre-Dame de Paris to attend a mass, following which he visited the Hotel de Ville. Largillière depicted the elders and the city council members discussing a project for the celebration to be held on the occasion of the King’s attending a ceremonial dinner in the city council building. The scene of the dinner is represented in the painting placed in the depth of the composition. At the centre of the composition is the bust of Louis XIV, to the left are the elders holding the plan of the city hall and a magistrate Bucot, demonstrating the model of the king’s statue. While fulfilling the official commission, Largillière created an expressive group portrait within the limits of the historical genre.
