Gun

France, Circa 1605/1610

This gun has a flint lock and was intended for use during hunting. Amongst numerous examples of firearms of similar purpose from the same era, it is remarkable for its rich and varied decoration, incorporating carved wood and mother-of-pearl, copper and other materials. The author of this magnificent work was the mechanic and artist Maren le Bourgeois, from the small town of Lisieux in Normandy. It is thought that the gun belonged to Louis XIII, King of France.
